Charlotte Observer: Envisioning what future workplaces could look like
What do workplaces look like in the future? A string of cubicles in an office skyscraper? Or a connected web of workers operating remotely using laptops and cell phones and meeting in a virtual 3-D world?

Chicago Tribune: A shift toward working from home
Nationwide, a push to get more workers telecommuting could save more than $650 billion a year from cost reductions associated with less office space and utilities, gasoline and transportation, traffic-related injuries, absenteeism and worker turnover, day care, meals, clothing and commuting time as well as increased productivity…

Washington Post (blog): Rethinking the workplace in the 21st century
Sometimes the sign of good leadership is an ability to see challenges as opportunities rather than roadblocks to success. Case in point: telework. It can be tempting as a manager to assume that workers who are not present are not productive. One agency head recently told one of my colleagues: “People come to the office and do nothing. I want those kinds of employees inconvenienced by having to come into the office. I don’t want them working in the comfort of their homes.”

Work Shifting: Senate Unanimously Approves Workshifting Bill Shot Down by House Two Week Earlier
The House bill should have made it a no-brainer. You’d think the staggering costs of lost productivity from federal workers during this Winter’s snowstorms–estimated by the government’s own bean counters at $71 million a day–would wake lawmakers up to the need for a trained teleworkforce. Apparently, at least in the House, those memories melted along with the ice.

The Province: Working away from office is the new norm
Teleworking — working remotely at least one day a week– is on the rise. It is driven by companies desperate to cut costs with a new emphasis on the green movement and the increasing availability of a high-speed Internet connection. Today, more than 34 million U.S. adults telecommute at least occasionally and that number is expected to swell to 63 million — or 43 per cent of U.S. workers — by 2016.

The Washington Post: Federal employees’ work-life balance is still on shaky ground
Teleworking, of course, is a key factor in flexible work arrangements. But although everyone seems to agree that it is a good thing, implementing it is another story. Foley cited 2008 survey data indicating that 49 percent of federal agencies report “management resistance remains a major barrier to telework.” Almost a third said computer security and funding for information technology “each are significant barriers to the use of telework.”

WebWorkerDaily.com: How to Have a Productive First Week in a New Job as a Remote Employee
One of the most difficult periods in any job is the first few weeks, while you are getting to know your team, the company and your new job. It can be a difficult time for any employee, but it can be even more difficult for employees who are working in remote offices or telecommuting. Getting to know the team and understanding the company culture are much more difficult when you aren’t sitting in the corporate office with the rest of your team.

Broadband Breakfast: The White House Wants to Make Work Cool Again
Introduced as the Teleworker-In-Chief, President Obama described workplace flexibility as essential to the well-being of our families and the success of our businesses. “It affects the strength of our economy—whether we’ll create the workplaces and jobs of the future we need to compete in today’s global economy.” The call for flexible employment opportunities couldn’t have been more clear.

WebWorkerDaily.com: 5 Ways to Wreck Your Corporate Telework Program
After you put your first corporate telework program in place, you’ll find that the actions and inactions of management, workers staying in the office, and the teleworkers themselves all have an impact on the success of the program. Managing these stakeholders and the politics they bring into play is integral to the success of teleworking in your organization.
