Work Shifting: Chasing Mobility

Work Shifting: Chasing Mobility

I’ve been workshifting for a long time. I started out with pens and paper and dimes for the payphone – long before e-mail was ordinary and mobile phones were ubiquitous. I embraced technology at every step, and my business life is littered with the detritus of obsolete objects to prove it.

Web Worker Daily: Take the Lead in Your Remote Work Relationships

At the beginning of a new project, it’s easy for the freelance remote worker to leave the decision-making about the project to the client. Often, I find myself thinking, “Well, they know what they want; I’ll let them explain it.” But it can be extremely valuable to promote conversations about your remote working arrangements with clients yourself. By taking the lead in initiating discussions, you can…

New York Times: Documents Can Be Summoned at a Touch With 2 iPad Apps

New York Times: Documents Can Be Summoned at a Touch With 2 iPad Apps

Neither app is enough to make me scrap my laptop — Documents To Go needs to work out some bugs, and Quickoffice is the slicker and more reliable of the two — but now that I can get some work done on the iPad, I plan to pick up an external keyboard. Android and iPhone users should take note of these apps, too, since their small-screen versions are similarly refined. Whether you are desperate enough to squint at your work and edit with your thumbs is another matter.

PRISM Consulting: Business Essentials – What’s in Your Office?

PRISM Consulting: Business Essentials – What’s in Your Office?

In this techno-savvy age, I am always surprised when I see a high-powered business person overwhelmed, running late and still using a regular cell phone. I’ll admit that when I was presented with the idea of switching to a Blackberry (TM) a few years ago, I bucked it. I also bucked having a dual monitor on my computer and a laptop with a VPN (virtual personal network). I was so used to working one way and was very efficient, so why change?

Inc. Magazine: Why My Company is Virtual

There’s a lot of pressure to have an office, but if you can trust your employees and if you don’t have a lot of physical stuff like prototypes, then it’s a great model. You’re going to save a bunch of money on real estate, and it’s going to be good for the environment, because you’re not commuting, and you’re not using an office.

Financial Post: A window into your office

Financial Post: A window into your office

We’ve all been there: Out of the office, on the road, and in a situation where we need access to a critical file. Unfortunately, even though mobile devices are very advanced these days, they can’t always give us what we need, just when we need it. For example, it isn’t easy to find a particular piece of information in a very large PowerPoint slide by hunting and pecking on your BlackBerry or by clumsily thumbing your iPhone. And while your laptop may be handy, the file you need may be on a computer somewhere else. What do you do?

Work Shifting: Has Technology Made the Work Day Longer?

Work Shifting: Has Technology Made the Work Day Longer?

By extending the definition of work-day to include workshifting, it opens up a world of possibilities on how to achieve an objective.  I can collaborate with social media tools, attend a conference or speaking engagement, have an online meeting and of course (at least in my case) go to the office for a dose of much needed corporate culture.  Despite how this post may read, I love going into the office because I need to connect in person.

BusinessWeek: Five Reasons to Take Your Business on the Road

BusinessWeek: Five Reasons to Take Your Business on the Road

Years ago, road warriors referred only to a small subset of employees whose job required them to work from outside the office.  Today companies and their employees are often spread across multiple locations and time zones. Smart phones and laptops combined with cloud-based applications and services, such as an on-demand file server, can provide the mobile worker with all the benefits of a traditional office.
